Introduction --- Name Index --- Scarborough Family Line --- Cemeteries --- Family Structure --- Scarborough Tidbits --- DNA
Welcome to our family history website.
This site primarily includes the line from Henry Scardeburg (1270? - ????) up to Henry Scarborough, III (1565 - August 24, 1617) of North Walsham, County Norfolk, England. It follows his sons, Samuel B. Scarborough (November 4, 1593 - April 20, 1655?9) and Captain Edmund Scarborough (1584?8 - 1634), who came to America around 1620 and settled in Accomac County, Virginia. The line continues from Samuel to William Scarborough of Surray County, Virginia (1630? - March 16, 1677), a.k.a. the "William Scarborough of Bacon's Rebellion," to David Scarborough (1720 - 1774) of Edgecombe County, North Carolina and Addison Scarborough (1754 - 1831) and Henry Scarborough (1780 - 1857) both of Lee County, South Carolina.

Scarborough Introduction
by Harvey Scarborough (June 17, 2008)
Home Page --- Scarborough Family Line --- Name Index --- Cemeteries --- Family Structure --- Scarborough Tidbits --- DNA
In the beginning...

Even as I write, information continues to pour in that causes me to correct, revise, and amend the names, dates and particulars of this Scarborough Family history. Begun in the Summer of 2000, this is a fairly new work, and as far as I know, it is the only individually created one about the "England to Virginia to South Carolina Scarborough Family" that is available just from the Internet. This effort is an attempt to show all the individuals that are related to my children, Katie Morgan Scarborough and Jordan Thomas Scarborough. It is hoped that one day, any descendant will be able to click on his or her name, and those of their relatives, then combine that with the necessary documentation showing the family members' existence and connections.

Secured Access

At one time, a separate site showed living persons that was accessed by assigned passwords. Due to a recent change in website hosts, information on the living is no longer available. I do not wish to promote identity theft, etc. by displaying details on living persons. Information on the living will not be made available.

A word of caution:

I caution the puriest. This "hope to be genealogy" is in its earliest stage. I'm still gathering the various branches of our tree and at this point have very little documentation to certify or to authenticate the material. Eventually, that too will come, if not by me, hopefully by others. I've tried to make note of fragmented and contradictory information in the hope that future endeavors will uncover the truth. Also, as time and storage space permit, such documentation will be scanned and viewable at the click of the mouse button.

Acknowledgements

I am very grateful to the following for their contributions:

My father, David C. Scarborough, Sr. (July 8, 1918 - January 2, 1988) of South Carolina [great-great-great grandson of Henry Scarborough (1780-1857)], who "jump started" me with a family tree outline that he was able to create from notes supplied by Bill and Alfred Scarborough in 1986 as well as from his own personal recollection. I guess it was somewhat ironic or prophetic that all those family reunions my parents would drag my brothers and me to has perhaps influenced the creation of this genealogy! Oh how I wish today that I had taken photographs, recorded interviews and had just plain listened to the family discussions at those reunions. If only those great aunts and uncles could talk to me now!

My brother, David C. Scarborough, Jr. [great-great-great-great grandson of Henry Scarborough (1780-1857)] established a website for this family information. He created it at Homestead.com early in January 2001. Although this information was re-created at Hostex.net in August 2002 and the new site has its own www.com name, David got the ball rolling for Internet delivery. Prior to David's help, this information was available only by diskette (nine at last count) directly from me. David really helped to get this work to you, the viewer.

Thomas Wheeler Dickinson of Darlington, SC, great-great-great grandson of Henry Scarborough (1780-1857), who helped with information about the Henry Scarborough family cemetery. I would like to thank Mr. Thomas Dickinson of Darlington, SC for contributions he has made to Major Addison Scarborough's page, Henry Scarborough's page, Hanford Augustus Scarborough's page and the Cemeteries page.

Earnest Hoyt Scarborough, Jr. of Okanagan, Washington [great-great grandson of Henry Scarborough (1780-1857)] --- Earnest was my first contact outside the immediate family and he has proven to be a very good contact indeed. He has provided numerious documents which are incorporated throughout this work. Cousin Earnest has inherited much of his father's genealogy collection. He works on it almost daily. He's an inspiration for anyone working in genealogy!

A special thanks goes to Dianna Young, great-granddaughter of Ewing Carl Gott, Sr. and granddaughter of Bessie Mae Gott. She has provided much of the Gott Family information.

I owe a special debt of gratitude to Kellie Renee Knotts Moyd [great-great-great-great-great granddaughter of Henry Scarborough (1780-1857)] and my first cousin once removed. She put me in contact with Robert Bowman Scarborough and provided me with a ton of information on the Carter Family. She has done quite a bit of research (the real thing - you know, at the Archives!) plus she's made the trips to remote cemeteries.

Robert Bowman Scarborough (1928 - ) of Charleston, SC [great-great-great grandson of Henry Scarborough (1780-1857)] whose book SCARBOROUGHS of Eastern Shores Virginia, Surry County, Virginia; Edgecombe County, North Carolina And South Carolina is an invaluable source and is quoted most often in this work. "Cousin Bobby" is a very enthusiastic researcher and enjoys the many family connections he's made while compiling information for his book.

Maggie Shrull of Washington State whose husband, Len Shrull, is a descendant of Mary Scarborough. She forwarded information to me that helped fill in blanks about Mary and her father, Edward Scarborough.

Hans Stragand of Ludwigshafen, Saar, Germany "found me on the Internet" and has since sent me invaluable research on the Stragand Family line prior to its migration from Germany to the United States. Recollection of the family's roots was only to the latter 1800's when Peter William Stragand (1847 - 1917?) came to America. Although I knew absolutely nothing of the German language, Hans knew just enough English to get me to understand what he was sending. The Stragands are related to the Scarboroughs indirectly by marriage (my mother-in-law is a Stragand and my children, Katie and Jordan Scarborough are 1/4 Stragand). Without the Internet, it is very douptful that I would have ever obtained the additional six generations of Stragands on my own. And of course, I have also discovered my wife's 4th cousin!

In October 2002, through a search of the Raymer Family on Google.com, my wife discovered two Raymer individuals with connections to her family. Mr. Ken Raymer (her 5th cousin once removed) has a remarkable website (located at: Ken Raymer's Web Page) dedicated to the Raymer family of Kentucky (five more families also), and Mr. Lloyd Raymer (her 3rd cousin once removed) who is a professional genealogist that has extensive research on the Raymer family. Lloyd Raymer helped me establish the connection from my children to his and Ken's family lines. And Ken's website helped to add four more past generations of Raymers to the Raymer Family in this website.

In December 2002, Michael Burgess (an unknown up to this time seventh cousin) telephoned me to say he viewed the website and had additional information on the Burgess Family. His information added five more generations to the Burgess Line. This was especially important since I had reached a dead-end on Burgess family connections. Michael has written a 700+ page book that details the Burgess family, The House of the Burgesses, and it is available through Millefleurs Information Services, P. O. Box 2845, San Bernardino, CA 92406-2845, USA. His email address is borgopr@gte.net.

In January 2003, Jesse Bush Barrett, Jr. contacted me via the Internet and furnished additional information for the Barrett Family webpage. Jesse has extensive information on his wife's family (Loftin). He is seeking additional information on the Barrett line, located around the Durham/Henderson, North Carolina area. Any information that can add to his line can be sent to msmargeret@svic.net.

I thank Elisabeth Dugger Klein who contacted me in June 2003 seeking more information on her connection to the Scarborough family. Rather than getting information from me, she passed along information to me on the Dugger-Scarborough connection! She directed me to a great website maintained by Marty Grant named www.martygrant.com.

Also in June 2003, Bonnie Honea, great-great granddaughter of Sarah Kizziah Scarborough (1907? - 1853?8), provided me with information on Henry & Frances Scarborough's daughter and the Barnes Family connection. Much of Bonnie's information came from the book Our Ancestors (1977) written by Jessie Mae Ashford and Adelle Brown Ashford. It has a chapter on the Scarborough family which quotes from Southern Kith and Kin Volume 3, by Jewel Davis Scarborough.

In the Summer of 2004, Philip Marin contacted me after finding the website. He helped build onto the Stragand Family by adding his wife's branch of the tree - G. Virginia Stragand (1933 - 1979).

Again, during the Summer of 2004, Holly Ann Harris Scarborough forwarded her husband's line to me. Although at first, I had a hard time connecting the line to mine, it did open the door for a correction to William Scarborough (1630? - 1677) of Bacon's Rebellion. For some time, I had only three sons for William, then Holly's information revealed a fourth son, Thomas Scarborough (1669 - 1722). This was quickly seconded with information from Cynthia McDaniel, who showed six sons altogether, including Thomas. Therefore, another branch is added to this growing family tree!

Also in the Summer of 2004, Deborah Suzanne Scarborough added her branch to the Scarboroughs that went all the way back to William Scarborough (1630? - 1677) of Bacon's Rebellion. Her line continues through William's eldest son Edward Scarborough (1666? - 1715?6).

In late Summer 2004, Gale Lewis Scarborough added his branch to the Scarborough tree that intersects at Major James Scarborough (1748 - 1836) and continues with James' son John Rasberry Scarborough (1787 - 1846).

In early Fall 2004, Cynthia McDaniel (Ruhi19@cox.net) contacted me with corrections to the William Scarburgh (1630? - 1677) webpage. She descends from William's granddaughter Mary Scarborough (1695?-1783) + Daniel Dugger (1696?-1773?6) and has done extensive research into the Scarborough line. This information can be seen at: Descendants of Edmund Scarborough.

In May 2005, Sarah Beth Corey (scorey1214@yahoo.com) contacted me with the addition of the Bell Family Line to the John James Scarborough (1831 - 1870) webpage. She descends from John James Scarborough's son Henry Yancey Scarborough (1860 - 1930) and actually intersects the Scarborough line through the marriage of Henry Yancey Scarborough's daughter, Georgia Palmer Scarborough (1880 - 1944) and Kellie Kirkland Bell (1877 - 1943).

References

At this time, I have only portions, and photocopies at best, of three published works about the Scarboroughs. These are:
Southern Kith and Kin Volume 3, by Jewel Davis Scarborough of Abilene, Texas, 1957
White Columns by Sara Hamer Scarborough Morse, 1977
Squires and Dames of Old Virginia by Evelyn Kinder Donaldson, 1950

Special Note: Southern Kith and Kin Volume 3, by Jewel Davis Scarborough is no longer in print. However, Stephen T. Stephan, Grandson of Mildred Christine Scarboro(ugh). has painstakenly reproduced this 212-page book online which is downloadable and viewable via your personal computer. Just visit the The Scarboro Family of the South website and click on the "Southern Kith and Kin" words. This file requires Acrobat Reader to view and print.

And, I have the following complete book (Volume I): Our Ancestors by Jessie Mae Ashford and Adelle Brown Ashford, 1977

Robert Bowman Scarborough has his unpublished work in printed form: SCARBOROUGHS Of Eastern Shores Virginia, Surry County, Virginia; Edgecombe County, North Carolina And South Carolina

A key Burgess Family reference is: The House of the Burgesses by Michael Burgess with Mary Wickizer Burgess, 1994.
Michael has written a 700+ page book that details the Burgess family, The House of the Burgesses, and it is available through Millefleurs Information Services, P. O. Box 2845, San Bernardino, CA 92406-2845, USA. His email address is borgopr@gte.net.

For more information on Col. John Wise (1617-1695) and his descendants (who married Hannah Scarburgh 1625-1695), there is an excellent book titled: Col. John Wise of England & Virginia (1617-1695) written by Jennings Cropper Wise and the Virginia Historical Society. It was originally published in 1918 by The Bell Book and Stationary Co., Inc. Richmond, Virginia. Only a few books were printed; however, through a tireless effort by M. K. Miles (mkmiles3@comcast.net), this book is now available on CD-ROM at a reasonable price. Please feel free to contact M. K. to order a copy of this Microsoft WORD compatible book.

Special Note About Printing: Apparently different browsers print differently. If you are using AOL, and you are printing one of the individuals, highlight the printed area first and right click. Then select "Print" and select "Selection." You may want to test this out first with your own browser and PC, otherwise, the whole family file may print and it will not be formatted properly.

Warning about scrolling: For the most part, scrolling down will lead you to the next decendent or sibling. However, as additions are made, some family members will be placed in other files and can easily be missed. By scrolling only, it may be erroneously assumed that someone belongs in someone elses family line. Use the hyperlinks religiously! Then you shouldn't get misguided or lost!

Have fun, and thanks for visiting!
