William Scarburgh (a.k.a. "William of Bacon's Rebellion") (1630? - March 16, 1677) Home Page --- Scarborough Family Line --- Name Index Parents: Samuel B. Scarborough and Mary (last name unknown) Siblings: Unknown at this time Marriage: William married a fairly well to do woman named Naomi "Amy" Davis Holdsworth. This was her second marriage, her previous marriage was to Walter Holdsworth (spelling is varied for "Holdsworth"). Children: William had six sons: William Scarborough Jr. (1667? - 1717?) + Ann ? Thomas Scarborough (1669? - 1721?22) + Elizabeth ? (???? - ????) John Scarborough (1670? - 1696) + Mary ? (1720?25 - February 29, 1796) Christopher Scarborough (1672 - 1693?) David Scarborough (1675 - ????) "William of Bacon's Rebellion did not have a brother, Edward... Amy Holdsworth and Amy Davis are the same woman using the surname of her first marriage (Holdsworth) and her maiden name (Davis). Naomi used the name (probably a nickname) 'Amy' on occasion.
William's family settled in Surray County, Virginia. William was an active adherent of Bacon in his rebellion in Virginia. Triggered by grievances against the Royal Governor, Bacon and his followers took matters into their own hands and fought against marauding indians in Virginia since the Royal Governor did not want to take that step. Bacon eventually forced the Governor to call a general assembly to grant political reforms as well. The governor labeled Bacon a rebel. A casualty of the escalating conflict between Bacon and Royal Governor Berkeley was the burning of the Jamestown settlement on September 19, 1676. Due to illness, Bacon died on October 26, 1676 which ended the rebellion. Royal Commissioners were appointed by King Charles to investigate the grievances that led to the rebellion. [It is possible that William's first cousin, Sir Charles Scarborough, may have influenced King Charles' action.] Governor Berkeley was still in power but stubbornly refused to receive the Commissioners at his mansion at Green Springs. The Commissioners had brought pardons from the King for the rebels, but the Governor carried on his series of trials and executions. On March 16, 1677, William Scarborough was summarily convicted of treason and hanged. Shortly afterwards, the Governor was recalled to England. Click here for more information on: Bacon's Rebellion.
Edward Scarborough, Sr. (1666? - 1715?16) Home Page --- Scarborough Family Line --- Name Index Parents: William Scarborough and Amy Holdsworth Siblings: William Scarborough, Jr., Thomas Scarborough, Sr., John Scarborough, Christopher Scarborough, and David Scarborough Marriage: In 1691, Surry County, VA, Edward Scarborough married Ann (Tagno?) (1666? - ????) Children: They had six children: Mary Scarborough (1695? - 1783) + Daniel Dugger (Duggard?) (1696? - 1773?6) William Scarborough (1697? - 1736) + Sarah ? (1720? - ????) Edward Scarborough, Jr. (1700? - 1742?) Benjamin Scarborough (1702? - ????) Elizabeth Scarborough (1704? - ????) They are also shown to have two more children: Nicholas Scarborough and Richard Scarborough. Additional information is unavailable at this time.
Records show that on the death of Edward, the Surray County, VA Court ordered the Church Warden to bind out the children of Edward according to law (apparently Ann was deceased and the children were probably minors). On the following February, the Sheriff was directed to sell his estate at public auction.
Additional information provided by Maggie Shrull of Washington State (regarding Edward's daughter, Mary) is shown below. It conflicts slightly with the above, but is believed to be more creditable due to reference quotes: Maggie's husband, Len Shrull is a descendant of Daniel Duggard (Dugger) & Mary Scarborough:
"Daniel Dugger married Mary Scarborough sometime prior to 20 February 1716/1717, most likely
in Surry Co. VA. On that date, Daniel 'Duggard' and Mary, his wife, were listed as next
of kin to Edward 'Scarborow,' deceased, and came into Surry court and made an oath that
Edward had died without leaving a Will. (Surry Co., VA court orders 1713-1718, page 105.)
"In March 1716/1717, Daniel 'Duggard,' as administrator of Edward Scarborough's estate,
presented the inventory and appraisal of the estate in court. (Surry Co. VA court orders

with a value of L30.9.1 (Surry Co. VA Deeds, Wills, etc. 1715-1730, page 32.) On 17
February 1719, Daniel 'Duggard,' administrator, paid cash to Grace Lucas and
'daughter Duggard' from the estate of Edward 'Scarborow,' deceased (Surry

at: Archives Information.
Addison Scarborough was born in Southampton County,
Virginia. He was four years old when his family moved to Edgecombe
County, NC. Addison held his rank of major while he was in North Carolina.
Addison was apparently the first Scarborough to settle in South Carolina. He and
Giles Carter
(1764 - 1846) settled in the Lamar - Lynchburg - Bishopville area of
South Carolina at about the same time. Addison's plantation was about
one mile east of Manville between the Manville-Wisacky Road
and the Manville-St. Charles Road. He died on his plantation and was buried
there.
On November 29, 2002, Harvey Scarborough and
Tincy Swink Harmon visited the
Henry Scarborough Cemetery. A search was made for
Addison's grave, but to no avail. A stop was made at a house near the Manville-Wysacky
Road where Addison Scarborough's house and cemetery was believed to be . An older
gentleman was standing outside and asked if he might be familiar with a small,
old gravesite located somewhere near here. He stated that he had lived in the area all
his life and that just across the street (near where Addison's house was believed to
have stood) he and several others cleared off an old small cemetery. They even removed
the old tombstones as they wanted to clear out everything for planting and farming the
land. This was back in the 1970's. He couldn't remember the names on the stones - just
that they removed them and that was it. So it is believed that this may have
been Addison and several of his immediate family. It would have been due North of Henry's house,
cemetery and land. And this could explain why no one has been successful in locating his site in the last 30 years.
Addison's son, Henry, is buried in the
Scarborough Cemetery
which was near Henry's house which faced the Manville - St. Charles Road.
Josie Howell was also born in Southampton County, VA. Addison deeded 200 acres
of his 700+ acre plantation to son Henry.
Note per Harvey Scarborough, 2/14/2004:
"I found your website while researching the Cleveland School Fire. In your
notes on Addison Scarborough, you state that Bonnie Honeas is trying to locate the grave
of Bryant Andrew Jackson Scarborough. This grave is in the Bethnay-Tiller Cemetery on Edwin Hall
Road in Lee County, S.C. near the Kershaw County line. I have posted a photo of this grave
http://www.geocities.com/macolado/DSC00046.JPG. If you could pass this information on to
Mrs. Honea, I'm sure she would be appreciative. - David C. McLeod"
A special thanks goes to David McLeod for passing along this information to this website and
