Previously, it was thought that the father of James M. Ross was Thomas James Ross
and "Miss Bradley." That information is credited to James' daughter Ms. Florence Ross
Creighton from her memory (in her 90s at the time) as told in the 1960s. Note that
William's marriage into the Ives family may explain the appearance of a "Della Ives"
in the James M. Ross family photo shown below.

Notes: At this time, the "Captain" name appears to be honorary. James Ross fought on the
Confederate side during the Civil War. Recent
inquiries about his service have revealed several names for J. M. Ross, James Ross and
James M. Ross in several South Carolina units. At this time, it is possible he may have
been in the 7th South Carolina Infantry Battalion as there is a Lieutenant James Ross in
Company E which was raised from men who lived in several counties including Sumter
and Kershaw Counties. It is believed that his brother, William A. Ross was a sargeant

He was remembered by daughter Florence Ross Creighton reported to have owned at one
time several hundred acres of land and many slaves
near Pisgah, SC. He was born near Rembert, SC. He and Mary Jones Ross are buried in
Tirzah Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Dalzell, SC.
In August 2007, Lori McLeod Wilke (dillysdillys@yahoo.com)
determined from a 1912? family photo of the Jesse Smith/Susan Emma Ross Smith family that one of the four
children in the photo is Jesse Smith, who perished at age 13 in the Cleveland
School Fire.

Notes:
Thomas Salmond Ross farmed near Dalzell, SC. He and Sarah are buried in
Providence Southern Methodist Church Cemetery
near Dalzell, SC. The tombstone epitaph reads: "A tender mother and a
faithful father."
Time and date of both photos unknown, but believed to be around the latter 1930's.
It's also possible that these could have been taken in 1935 at the time of their
50th wedding anniversary!

Maud Ross did not like her middle name, Lucretia, and had it changed
legally to Louise. The "e" normally at the end of "Maud" was the actual spelling
of her first name.
Maud Ross posed for pictures by turning her head to the left to prevent
exposure of a very visable birthmark on the left side of her face.
Maud's tombstone was erected at son David Carl Scarborough's insistence.
W. C. Scarborough wanted a double headstone, but did not want it until he
died. David Carl Scarborough did not like the thought of his mother's
grave going without a headstone, so he had a single one placed anyway.
Eventually a duplicate was made for W. C. when he died. Both have the
same epitaph: "Earth hath no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal."
Excerpt from her obituary:
Camden, June 19 - Funeral service for Mrs. Maud Louise
Scarborough of Camden and Columbia, who died at the Columbia Hospital
early Tuesday morning, will be held at Kornegay Funeral home at 4 o'clock
Wednesday afternoon. Internment will be in the Providence Methodist
churchyard cemetery Sumter county.
