The Henry Scarborough Cemetery, was organized September 5, 1957 for the purpose of preserving and beautifying it. At this time, it is unknown if the organization still exists, as a group, or as a person.

 

On March 27, 1960, Mary Stuckey of Bishopville, SC visited this cemetery and copied the following information from the gravestones. She comments: "The engraving on one or two gravestones was worn away and unreadable and there was evidence of other gravestones missing - only the bases remaining."

  1. Alfred Scarborough, born May 27, 1800; died March 4, 1890.
  2. Mrs. Margaret Scarborough, born September 1, 1802; died March 14, 1879.
  3. Margaret Amanda, wife of Capt. H. E. L. Peebles, and daughter of Alfred Scarborough, Esq., born August 27, 1827; died June 19, 1878.
  4. Newton Kennedy, son of H. E. L. and M. A. Peebles, aged 2 years and 4 month.
  5. W. Bonaparte Pebbles, born June 29, 1852; died July 14, 1898.
  6. William A. James, son of Holloway and Roxanna James, born July 20, 1822; died November 27, 1893. (A Confederate marker is on this grave.)
  7. Cornelia C. James, daughter of W. A. & G. A. James, born December 25, 1849; died May 16, 1881.
  8. Mrs. W. A. James, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Scarborough, born December 1, 1822; died December 25, 1875.
  9. M. Jane McFaddin, wife of R. E. McFaddin and daughter of A. & M. Scarborough, born August 25, 1833; died July 6, 1860.
  10. Laura Ellen Cook (A large tombstone, but writing worn and unreadable.) [1924-1957]
  11. Joel Newton, eldest son of A. & M. Scarborough, born April 30, 1831; died (from effects of a nail sticking in his heel) the 22nd July, 1837.
  12. William K. Bateman, son of John and Margaret Bateman, who departed this life October 27, 1837 - aged 3 years and 11 days.
  13. Sarah F. Bateman, born October 9, 1833; died February 18, 1838.
  14. Henry Bateman who departed this life August 21, 1858; aged 25 years and 1 month. [Born July 21, 1833]
  15. Henry Scarborough, born July 30, 1780; died September 6, 1857.
  16. Frances Scarborough, born August 30, 1782; died January 8, 1876.
  17. Edmund Scarborough, born May 21, 1823; died September 29, 1881.
  18. Mrs. Martha A. Mixon, born December 21, 1815; died November 5, 1878.
  19. Miss Nancy Scarborough, born February 28, 1819; died October 12, 1856.
  20. Sarah E. A. Bateman, born January 22, 1855; died July 4, 1856.
  21. Margaret Bateman, wife of John Bateman, born July 25, 1812; died May 16, 1861.
  22. Mary A. Bateman, born October 2, 1847; died July 25, 1876.
  23. Addison J. Bateman, born March 7, 1850; died August (?May?) 2, 1855.
  24. Aleck G., son of W. S. & R. Scarborough, aged 15 months and 21 days.
  25. Rosa May, daughter of Wm. S. & Roxy A. Scarborough, died September 12, 1878, aged 15 months and 15 days. [Born June 27, 1877]
  26. Frances, wife of N. B. Scarborough, born August 3, 1837; died June 30, 1900.
  27. Lela., daughter of N. B. & F. V. Scarborough, born August 3, 1872; died June 4, 1898.

  36. Newell E., son of E. T. & M. I. Richbourg, December 3, 1890; June 13, 1891.
  37. Roy, son of E. T. and M. I. Richbourg, aged five months and ____ days.
  38. Ella M. Scarborough, born February 22, 1866; died November 30, 1877.

NOTE: #2 - Mrs. Margaret Mixon Scarborough appears to have been born September 1, 1800 rather than 1802 as listed above. A photo of her tombstone is shown below.
Note: #10 - Laura Ellen Cook (December 30, 1824 - January 10, 1857) is the daughter of Alfred and Margaret Scarborough. The comment about the writing "worn and unreadable" is partially true, but Laura's dates are 1824-1857, not 1924-1957) - Harvey Scarborough (November 29, 2002).
