Dowdey/Dowdy Family Introduction This line of the Dowdey (spelled with an "e") Family is from the Columbia, Eastover and lower Richland County areas of South Carolina. The Dowdey Family and the Scarborough Family (also of South Carolina), came together through the marriage of Bernice Ruth Dowdey and David C. Scarborough, Sr. . Marriage: Lemuel Dowdey married Emma ? (1793 - 1856) Children: It is unknown just how many children there were, but they had at least two sons: Joshua H. Dowdy (1833 - 1872) He was originally from North Carolina. His grave marker states: "Where death, where darkness reigns, Jehovah is my stay, His road my trembling feet sustains, His staff defends my way."
Lemuel Dowdey, along with son William Henry Dowdey, are buried in the Dowdey Cemetery near McLeod United Methodist Church. The cemetery is actually in the median of U. S. Highway 378, just one mile west of U. S. Highway 601. Several of Lemuel's grandchildren are also buried there. |

Dowdy Marriage: William Henry Dowdey married Rosa Belle Jackson (1st wife, 1824 - 1870?) and Susan Alberta Morgan (2nd wife, December 24, 1849 - June 22, 1932) on December 1, 1870 Children: There were ten children: Lillie Carolyn Dowdey (September 27, 1873 - December 1, 1952) Eunice "Eva" Evangeline Dowdey (January 8, 1877 - June 30, 1926) Annie Lemuel Dowdey (October 4, 1879 - November 17, 1970) Lemuel Charles Dowdey (May 8, 1882 - December 29, 1922) Cleveland Walker Dowdey (November 4, 1885 - June 24, 1940) Joshua Heyward (or Haywood) Dowdey (June 6, 1887 - May 14, 1957) William Henry Dowdey, Jr. (June 8, 1891 - December 8, 1909) Tillinghast Morgan Dowdey (August 8, 1894 - April 20, 1969) He was a graduate of medical school, but after the Civil War his primary profession was farming. He did continue, as a "country doctor" to treat residents of lower Richland County. He would also pull teeth if anyone needed it. He passed his knowledge on to daughter, Octavia Dowdey, who also treated those who could not afford medical attention.
Both William Henry Dowdey and Susan Alberta Morgan are buried in the Dowdey Cemetery in Eastover, SC. Also buried there are: daughters Lillie Carolyn Dowdey Garner Young, Annie Lemuel Dowdey Garner and sons Lemuel Charles Dowdey, Cleveland Walker Dowdey and William Henry Dowdey, Jr. Photos of their markers/tombstones are shown there also. Daughter Octavia Dowdey Garner is buried in the McLeod United Methodist Church Cemetery just across the street from the Dowdey Cemetery.
Note: Two children carry the name "Lemuel" because Susan Alberta Morgan liked the name.

Tillinghast Morgan ("Till") Dowdey, Sr. (August 8, 1894 - April 20, 1969) Home Page --- Dowdey Family Line --- Craft Family Line --- Name Index --- Family Structure --- Dowdey Cemetery Parents: William Henry Dowdey and Susan Alberta Morgan Siblings: There were five brothers, three sisters and one half-sister: William Gilbert Dowdey, Lemuel Charles Dowdey, Cleveland Walker Dowdey, Joshua Heyward Dowdey, William Henry Dowdey, Jr., Annie Lemuel Dowdey, Lillie Carolyn Dowdey, Eva Evangeline Dowdey, and half-sister Octavia Dowdey Marriage: Tillinghast Morgan Dowdey married Sarah Craft. Children: They had six children: Carl Eugene Dowdey (living) + Geraldine "Jerry" Miller (living) Tillinghast Morgan Dowdey, Jr. (living) + Maree Elizabeth Smith (living) Harvey Nelson Dowdey (living) + Willie Jo Graham (living) Ernest Craft Dowdey (February 14, 1934 - May 22, 1993) + Jewell Abbott 1st and Florrie Blume Thomas 2nd Ethel Carol Dowdey (living) + Charles Nixon Brannon (1931 - ) His hobby was woodworking in which he built several shelves and tables which survive him today. In addition to being known as "Till," family began calling him "DD" shortly after their first grandchild. David Carl Scarborough, Jr. began calling him "DD" after he began talking. David Scarborough also "named" Sarah Craft Dowdey "MaMa."
At age 26, Till began three years of service in the Navy during World War I and drew duty on the USS President Lincoln. It was a transport ship which carried soldiers to France. On May 31, 1918, during his fifth round-trip back to the United States, Germans submarine U-90 fired 3 torpedoes into the port side, sinking the ship in about 20 minutes with 715 on board. Although 26 men were lost, he survived on a raft in the water for about 18 hours. After he returned home, he worked as an electrician repairing railroad locomotives for Southern Railway in Columbia, South Carolina. He retired after 40 years. The Dowdey Family House was his home for almost 30 years.
