Notes:

He was a graduate of medical school, but after the Civil War his primary profession was farming. He did continue, as a "country doctor" to treat residents of lower Richland County. He would also pull teeth if anyone needed it. He passed his knowledge on to daughter, Octavia Dowdey, who also treated those who could not afford medical attention.

Both William Henry Dowdey and Susan Alberta Morgan are buried in the Dowdey Cemetery in Eastover, SC. Also buried there are: daughters Lillie Carolyn Dowdey Garner Young, Annie Lemuel Dowdey Garner and sons Lemuel Charles Dowdey, Cleveland Walker Dowdey and William Henry Dowdey, Jr. Photos of their markers/tombstones are shown there also. Daughter Octavia Dowdey Garner is buried in the McLeod United Methodist Church Cemetery just across the street from the Dowdey Cemetery.

Note: Two children carry the name "Lemuel" because Susan Alberta Morgan liked the name.

Photo of Susan Alberta Morgan that Sarah Craft Dowdey kept in her house for many years - date and location of photo unknown. She grew up in Richland County, SC. Susan's mother died when she was born. Her father gave her to Mr. & Mrs. Gilbert Garner to raise and then he and his sons left South Carolina. There was no further communication from them after they left.

According to Sarah Craft Dowdey, "W. H. Dowdey rode his horse to see [Susan Morgan] her when he proposed. When he asked her to marry him, she referred him to a verse in the Bible. So he got on his horse, went back home to read the verse to learn his answer." The verse was Ruth 1:16, "...Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God."

Notes:

His hobby was woodworking in which he built several shelves and tables which survive him today. In addition to being known as "Till," family began calling him "DD" shortly after their first grandchild. David Carl Scarborough, Jr. began calling him "DD" after he began talking. David Scarborough also "named" Sarah Craft Dowdey "MaMa."

At age 26, Till began three years of service in the Navy during World War I and drew duty on the USS President Lincoln. It was a transport ship which carried soldiers to France. On May 31, 1918, during his fifth round-trip back to the United States, Germans submarine U-90 fired 3 torpedoes into the port side, sinking the ship in about 20 minutes with 715 on board. Although 26 men were lost, he survived on a raft in the water for about 18 hours. After he returned home, he worked as an electrician repairing railroad locomotives for Southern Railway in Columbia, South Carolina. He retired after 40 years. The Dowdey Family House was his home for almost 30 years.

Excerpts from the obituary: T. M. Dowdey, Sr. of 809 South Maple Street (Columbia, SC), retired Southern Railway employee, died Sunday in the Veterans Hospital. Funeral services will be in Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Tuesday at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
He was born in Lower Richland County, son of the late William Henry and Susan Morgan Dowdey. He was a member of the Maple Street Southern Methodist Church and a veteran of World War I. Mr. Dowdey was a member of the Railroad Retirement Club.
