Note: The following is an excerpt from a 30-page, typed genealogy titled "DESCENDENTS - Giles Carter of South Carolina and Magdelan DuBose Carter [and] Son James John Carter[who] married Susannah Benton Lawrence," It was written by LaRae Carter Corbett of Charleston, SC (great, great grandaughter of Giles Carter) and edited by Jennie Carter. It was not documented for publication but provided for the interest of the reader. The date is unknown, but probably around 1980:

The Carter family is one of forty-nine selected by the American Historical Genealogical Society for whom family histories were published by that organization.

The name of Carter is derived from the occupation of "Carter." The word for cart is from the Norman-French "charette."

English records from as far back as 1273 give variant forms of the name as follows: Joeius Caretarius, Co. Oxford - 1273; Juliana Le Cartere, Co. Cambridge - 1273; Nicholas Le Carter, Co. Oxford, 1273; John Le Carters, Co. Hunts, 1273; Robert La Caretter, Co. Hunts, 1273; Ricardus Carter, 1379; Robert Carter married Margaret Byllynge, St. Dionis Backchurch, 1570; Richard Carter married Cecily Ellmer, St. James clerkenwell, 1574.

The Carter families settled mainly to the north of London. They seemed to be widely spread in the counties of Bedford, Hertford, Middlesex, Buckingham and Hertfordshire, as well as in the city of London.

Several families bearing the surname of Carter emigrated to America.

Robert "King Carter" Carter (1663 - 1732) of Corotoman, son of Col. John and Sarah Carter, married Judith Armistead in 1688. Their children were John Carter, Elizabeth Carter, Judith Carter and Anne Carter. His second wife was Mrs. Elizabeth Landon Willis. Their children were: Robert Carter, Sarah Carter, Col. Charles Carter, Ludlow Carter, Landon Carter, Mary Carter and Lucy Carter.

Additional information by LaRae Carter Corbett is noted in the individual pages of Giles Carter and Charles Powell Carter.

Parents: Both parents are unknown at this time, therefore this line starts here!
Siblings: Possibly one brother: Col. Edward Carter
Marriage: He apparently was married four times: first to Anne Glynn, second to Eleanor Brocas, third to Anne, daughter of Cleve?, a cousin, and forth to Sarah Ludlow.
Children: Their apparently were children from his first and fourth marriages: From Anne Glynn three children:
George Carter (???? - ????)
John Carter (???? - ????)
Elizabeth Carter (???? - ????)
And from Sarah Ludlow, three children:
Robert "King" Carter (???? - ????)
Sarah Carter (???? - ????)
Giles Carter, Sr.
Notes: John Carter of Corotoman [another source states High Shipley, England], the first of the family in Virginia, left England about 1649. He was probably one of the "Distressed Royalist Cavaliers" who sought refuge in the colony from Cromwell's faction in control of England. He was probably a brother of Col. Edward Carter, a member of the Virginia Council in 1659. John settled first in Upper Norfolk (now Nansemond County). He represented the county in the House of Burgesses soon after his arrival in Virginia. In 1665, he was listed as Col. John Carter, Esquire, Councillor of State. He was granted 4,000 acres of land for bringing 80 persons to the colony. He moved to Lancaster County in 1654 where he was Justice of the Peace and a Burgesses.

William and Emma are buried at Fair Hope Church & Cemetery, 3 miles southeast of Carter's Crossroads, SC on East Lynches River Rd.

Note: Previous information had shown that General William Giles Harding Carter, a first cousin to William Perry Carter, fought with the Army of the Tennessee (Union) in the Civil War and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Thanks to new information on December 19, 2005 from Dwight Stuckey, a correction is being made here to show that General Carter (1851-1925), has a colorful history that can be found at: http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/whcarter.htm. His exact connection to this line of the Carter family is uncertain at this time. - HMS (12/19/2005).
